The Connection Between Ejaculation and Prostate Cancer

Miami Urologist

According to Miami urologist Dr. George Suarez, recent studies show that men who ejaculate more often are less likely to develop prostate cancer. In the largest study to date that explores the potential link between ejaculation and prostate cancer, researchers found that men between the ages of 40 and 49 who ejaculate at least 21 times per month were less at risk than those who ejaculated only four to seven times per month.

For the study, experts at Harvard Medical School studied approximately 32,000 men for a period of 18 years. Around 3,800 of those studied were diagnosed with prostate cancer during that time period. Researchers questioned the men regarding how often they ejaculated between the ages of 20 and 29, 40 and 49, and in 1991, which was the year before the survey was initiated.

The results revealed that the men who ejaculated more frequently were less likely to develop prostate cancer at all three parts of the study. Your Miami urologist reports that the findings remained consistent when environmental factors such as diet, lifestyle, and prostate cancer screening were taken into consideration.

The researchers now hope to identify why ejaculation reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Previous studies have suggested that ejaculation may lessen the risk of contracting the disease by flushing out cancer-causing agents.

The disease is the most common cancer among men in the UK, with 40,000 new cases diagnosed each year. As the disease develops slowly, men often only become aware when the prostate is large enough to affect how the urethra carries urine.

Your Miami urologist urges men over 50 to come in to be screened for prostate cancer. There is a temptation to avoid it – many men feel okay physically so they erroneously think they must be okay. In fact, many men have had to have more radical treatment because they waited to go to their Miami urologist until they noticed symptoms, which occurred when the prostate has become enlarged.
