According to Miami urologist Dr. George Suarez, research indicates that exercise has been shown to guard against inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, and even prostate cancer. Aerobic and exercises that provide resistance are best suited to improve a man’s prostate health.
The prostate gland is a part of the male reproductive system, which surrounds the urethra and discharges fluid into semen. As men age, the prostate grows and becomes inflamed for many men after they reach the age of 50. This growth can sometimes interfere with the bladder, resulting in urinary problems.
In one study, researchers found that men who exercised five or more hours per week were 30 – 50 percent less probable to develop BPH than men who exercised less than two hours a week. Your Miami urologist believes that the increased physical activity might also decrease testosterone to control prostate growth and lessen stress to relieve the severity of any urinary problems a patient may be experiencing.
Over a period of 18 years, researchers followed over 2,700 men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and found that the men who engaged in at least three hours of intensive exercise each week were over 60 percent less likely to die from prostate cancer than those who participated in less than 60 minutes of easy exercise per week.
Luckily, men have a variety of exercises to choose from to prevent prostate problems. Your Miami urologist suggests these aerobic and resistance exercises for prostate health:
- Walking
- Jogging
- Biking
- Tennis
- Rowing
- Jumping rope
- Dancing
- Hiking
- Yard work (such as raking leaves or gardening)
- Swimming
- Push-ups
- Weightlifting.
Keep in mind that you’ll need to exercise at least 30 minutes most days to realize the full benefits of physical activity. If you haven’t exercised recently, add physical activity slowly over time until you build up a routine that includes the type of exercise you enjoy.
