3 Important Steps to Take This Month

Miami urologist

June is Men’s Health Awareness Month and Miami urologist Dr. George Suarez is encouraging all men to take charge of their urologic health by making prevention a priority. Healthier men live longer, healthier, and happier lives.

This month, take these three important steps to improving your urologic health:

Step 1 – Get Your Prostate Checked

Approximately 30 million men suffer from prostate conditions that impact their quality of life. Each year more than 220,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. This June, make getting screened for prostate cancer a top priority if you’re of the appropriate age.

Your Miami urologist recommends getting a baseline PSA screening beginning at age 40, with annual screenings beginning at age 50.  If significant risk factors such as a strong family history or African American race are present, then annual screening should be considered on a regular basis after age 40.

Prostate cancer isn’t the only condition that affects the prostate. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common, non-cancerous condition in older men, in which the prostate gland enlarges, causing a number of symptoms, some of which include:

  • Recurrent, sudden need to urinate;
  • More and more frequent urination, especially at night;
  • Weak or interrupted urine stream;
  • Difficulty beginning urination;
  • Urinary incontinence;
  • Inability to completely empty the bladder.

Step 2 – Don’t Ignore Sexual Health Issues

As men age, sexual health issues may need to be addressed by an experienced Miami urologist. Talking to an urologist about sexual dysfunction can be difficult for many men, but it is incredibly important.  Often male sexual dysfunction is caused by an underlying factor or medical condition that can be treated with medical and/or surgical options.

Step 3 – Make it your Mission to Get Healthy, and Stay that Way

Miami urologistThis June, take important steps toward getting healthy and staying that way. Follow these steps to achieve your health goals:

  1. Stop smoking: Smoking is one of the leading contributors to many men’s health issues, including cardiovascular disease and bladder cancer.
  2. Eat a diet rich in vegetable and fruits and low in unhealthy fats.
  3. Get more exercise: From walking and swimming to running and biking, get moving a little bit every day.
  4. See your Miami urologist for regular health checks and follow up exams.
